Family Promise Mat-Su serves the homeless population in our community in several ways. Our shelter guests are provided meals, transportation, case management, and compassionate care through staff and volunteers in our community. Shelter is provided by area houses of worship by allowing guests to sleep in their Sunday school classes, or other areas designated. Meals are provided by host congregation volunteers who serve family style meals, offering a home-like environment. Evening activities include reading stories, playing games, rocking babies, teaching crafts, and life skills classes. Overnight volunteer hosts are present to open locked doors for those who have late work schedules. Transportation to and from work, appointments, interviews, day care, and school is provided for families who do not have their own by our staff. Every staff and volunteer are carefully interviewed and must participate in confidentiality and safety prior to working or volunteering in our program.
In our community, there are 5 shelter providers. Family Promise Mat-Su is unique in that we offer a functional, holsitic systems approach to ending homelessness. We support family togetherness to encourage bonds between our guests and our volunteers in hopes community connections are formed.
Our staff is ready to assist with computer use for job searches, referrals to landlords, and financial assistance through grants for deposits at their new homes. We provide gas cards, food cards, clothing vouchers, and encouragement. We grow close to our guests and celebrate with them in their successes.
