For families experiencing homelessness, summer is not a time for vacation.
As the school year comes to a close, families lose crucial support systems. Subsidized school lunches come to an end, and affordable childcare becomes scarce for parents. Research indicates that children facing homelessness encounter difficulties in their academic performance and may lag even more during the summer break.
For years, Kayla and her family experienced homelessness, resorting to sleeping in parks, motels, and even abandoned buildings. Family Promise provided them with shelter, meals, and supported Kayla's mom in developing her career. Eventually, they were able to secure a home of their own.
Having a home has made a significant difference in the family's life. Kayla's older sister could prepare for her high school prom in the comfort of her own home. Additionally, the children now have their own bedrooms and a yard to enjoy playing in, especially with summer approaching.
